Respect for Fish

Itching to fish this spring? We get it and we know there is great fishing close to Whitehorse.

The Yukon Fish and Game Association is working with the Carcross/Tagish Renewable Resources Council and a consortium of other organizations and Governments to deliver an angler outreach and education campaign to support vulnerable spring fisheries in the Southern Lakes.

We know our members love to fish and eagerly anticipate the spring, ice-off, recreational fisheries. Some of these early Grayling and Pike fisheries are annual “go-to” places for you and your family. Given that we’ve all been staying close to home with covid-19 and can’t wait to get out and fish, we anticipating increases in recreational fishing in accessible areas close to Whitehorse.

The YFGA supports your fishing and hunting efforts, securing healthy food and spending time outdoors with family during these unprecedented times. The YFGA is asking members to exercise additional stewardship while you are out there fishing.

In the spring there are some accessible Grayling and Pike fisheries that are actively spawning and vulnerable to the stress of recreational fishing. We are asking our members to support the stewardship and conservation of these valuable fisheries by reducing fishing effort, including catch and release and using best practices in fish handling.

You may see the attached signs out there while fishing. The YFGA has partnered on this project and recognizes that protecting vulnerable spring fisheries and using best practices is based in science.

By doing our part as anglers, we can ensure that our members and all Yukoners can fish for generations to come.
