The Nelchina caribou and Fortymile caribou threshold hunts open December 1, 2022, and will close on March 31, 2023, or when the respective harvest limits for each herd are met – whichever happens first.
The Nelchina caribou threshold hunt is in effect in Game Management Subzones 5-04, 5-05 and a portion of 5-06.
If you would like to hunt Nelchina caribou, contact your local environment office and request a Nelchina threshold hunt permit be added to your license.
The permit is free and this can be done over the phone. Once complete, you will need to re-download or reprint your updated license to carry in the field.
- The threshold limit for the Nelchina caribou herd is 25 caribou.
- Please note: Caribou herd locations are monitored through GPS collars that transmit data in real-time to biologists. If the Chisana caribou herd enters the Nelchina threshold hunt subzones, the hunt will be closed to conserve and protect the Chisana caribou herd.
- See map of the area.
- The Fortymile caribou threshold hunt is in effect in Game Management Subzones 219, 220, 221, 224, 301, 302, 303, 304, 306, and portions of 307, 310 and 312 not in overlap.
- The threshold limit for the Fortymile caribou herd is 300 caribou.
- Fortymile caribou in the Yukon are currently distributed in relatively small numbers throughout the threshold area, and winter off-road travel will be required to access the herd.
Reminder: Hunters in these Game Management Subzones must report their harvest and submit the caribou incisor bar within 72 hours.
To check harvest numbers and the open or closed status of the threshold hunts, call the Threshold Hunt Hotline at 1-833-560-HUNT (4868).
We encourage caribou hunters to familiarize themselves with this number and to check the threshold limit prior to heading out in the field.
