Friends of McIntyre Creek Vision Statement ( DOC )

Source:     FMC Date:     February 16, 2009

Whitehorse’s McIntyre Creek Urban Natural Park is a natural landscape in an evolving urban setting where the needs of a wildlife corridor and natural systems are balanced with outdoor leisure and environmental education opportunities.

The Vision of the Friends of McIntyre Creek (Friends) is to maintain in perpetuity the wilderness quality, the diversity, abundance of wildlife and the ecosystems on which it depends, while accepting recreational uses in parts of the McIntyre Creek Urban Natural Park that are designated for those uses. These uses may include skiing, snowmobile passage, quad passage, dog sledding, hiking, birding and orienteering.

The Friends of McIntyre Creek is an advocacy group dedicated to the protection of the Park for the benefit of all Whitehorse residents. The objectives of the Friends include education and awareness-raising activities and wildlife and fish habitat enhancement and improvement projects. The Friends will provide the community with an opportunity to exchange ideas and to become involved in the management of McIntyre Creek Urban Natural Park.

We will:
- Advocate for the maintenance of McIntyre Creek Urban Natural Park in a natural state by:
providing information, awareness and education for the maintenance of the Park;
organizing and encouraging volunteer participation in the planning and maintenance of the Park;
liaising with special interest groups concerned with the Park.

- Promote sustainable stewardship of the McIntyre Creek Watershed by developing specific objectives outlining management directions for the Park, including:
heritage appreciation objectives;
outdoor recreation objectives;
educational and awareness objectives;
heritage tourism and economic development objectives;
fish and wildlife management objectives.

YFGA is a supporting partner in promoting a Park for the McIntyre Creek area from the Yukon River to the head waters.
