President's Message
As I sit here thinking what to write for the next upcoming Outdoor Edge I can't believe that it is November and the year is quickly closing the door on us. I reflect back on this year's outdoor experiences and considering how few and far between these experiences were, and a few trip altering moments which did include water. They were all worth it, and it does make me appreciate the opportunities which we do have.
This is also the reason that makes me frustrated when we lose opportunities.
In the last decade there have been quite a few opportunities lost. From restrictions on the Finlayson Lake caribou, which are still being over harvested, to the caribou herds surrounding the Southern Lakes.
Then there was the fishing issue where they sold us on slot limits and how they protected the breeding fish, and afterwards prohibited keeping any big fish, resulting in even more fish killed then released. As if this is a good thing. I just can't think of what kind of people would come up with that policy. Definitely not a harvester, perhaps someone with little conscience about wasting food and injuring fish!
There are a number of areas in which many Yukoners have lost access due to land claims. Whether or not we have lost these opportunities honestly or correctly they have been lost. It has affected many of us. What I am saying is it is time to stop the change and turn it around with proper fish & wildlife management and proper habitat protection when needed.
Protect the habitat not the hunting grounds, and protect the animals which need protection and help.
