As I sit here looking over the pictures from the summer adventures I cannot help but think “how lucky we are to be living in the Yukon.”
Where else can you live where the outdoors are at the back of your lot, where in a few minutes of driving you are at a favorite fishing or hunting location and to be in such a vast untravelled and yet beautiful part of the world. I was fortunate as was my wife to be born here and now we have the chance to share it with our family and friends. What a privilege.
On my first trip I was following my friend Troy around the Mt. Nansen area looking for caribou. We saw many caribou and so much impressive country. As you sit and gaze at the surrounding mountains you see new exploration roads. I wonder how long it will be before the political bodies take away this opportunity as they did with the Richardson sheep permits. In the Richardson Mountains there is no biological reason why the hunting opportunities were taken away along with our Mtn. goat opportunities in the Kusawa Lake area. It would be such a treat if we could leave the politics out of wild life management and leave it in the hands of the technical experts in the Dept. of Environment.
The technical people are all about the fish, the wildlife, and their habitat whereas the politicians are about votes and all that is related to those votes.
It is now the middle of September and we still have not heard anything on Bison hunting. Why?? I can only decipher that it must have political overtones. Lack of decisions and poor decisions make me wonder if it is really possible to have responsible wildlife management. There is room in the Yukon for responsible sustainable harvest on most species. Please let the technical people in the Dept. of environment do their job. They have the ability to manage a sustainable harvest while protecting the things that need protecting.
