Shooting/Hunting Courses
Firearm Safety (Friday morning):
Participants will learn the basics of firearms safety and care with Randy Fraser, Hunter Education Coordinator for the Dept. of Environment. Such topics as calibre differences, determining dominant eye, rimfire and centrefire differences and bullet selection will be included. Randy Fraser will be your session leader.
Marksmanship with Rifles (Friday afternoon):
Join Randy Fraser for live firing opportunities. You will learn to sight in a firearm and practice marksmanship and safety to prepare you for the hunting season.
Fishing Courses
Passion for Fish (Friday, June 12 half day - morning OR afternoon sessions):
Susan Thompson, Fisheries Biologist, will share with you all about the life and times of fish – how to identify Yukon species, understand their biology; including life history, age and growth, sex, time of spawn, what kind of water every species lives in, why are fish slimy, what do they eat, etc. You’ve finally caught a fish. Now what? You will learn the best way to kill a fish, clean and fillet it and prepare it to eat. Methods of scaling, washing, cleaning, and different ways to cook them (smoking, drying, frying, roasting, boiling). Discover some simple recipes that will win over the most skeptical eaters!
Entomology (Friday, June 12 half day - morning OR afternoon sessions):
Join Chuck Gregersen to learn how aquatic insects and other lake dwelling food sources interact with the fish that hunt them, and how we, the Fly Angler, attempt to imitate and present them. Also, learn how the occurrence of seasonal lake turnover affects your fishing... plus, much more!
Introduction to Fly Casting (Saturday, June 13 half day dry land - morning OR afternoon sessions):
Once you learn the proper techniques and understand the principles involved, you too can make a great presentation of fly to fish. Learn from a passionate fly fisherman, Chuck Gregersen, about the right gear (fly rod, reel and line) for the fish that you will be pursuing. And much more!
Introduction to Angling (Saturday, June 13 half day dry land - morning OR afternoon sessions):
Learn the basics of rod and reel equipment and handling, using bait and lures, knot tying and live release techniques. With Dennis Zimmerman and Susan Thompson, you’ll discover the basics about fishing methods and the best time for fishing round the clock.
Tackle and Technique at Jackson Lake (Sunday, June 14 full day):
Put your new skills to practice for a day’s fishing at Jackson Lake with experienced anglers to guide you and answer your questions. We will bring along canoes and belly boats for fishing on the lake. Gear is provided, but bring your own hip waders and rods if you prefer.
Outdoor Courses
Backcountry Skills (full day Friday):
What do you do if you can’t get back to your hunting base camp? What do you do if the plane can’t come to pick you up? Join Tami Hamilton to learn about the important basics of mental preparedness, fire management and shelter. You will also learn how to set up a bush camp and all the skills required to do it safely and efficiently.
ATV and Motor Boat Travel and Safety (full day Saturday):
Practice getting your ATV on and off a trailer and learn the basics of trouble shooting on small engines. Learn how to be safe on and around water, including trailering procedures, launching, boarding and outboard motor operation. Kris Gustafson, Conservation Officer, and Randy Fraser will lead this session.
Botany Walk (Sunday half day – morning OR afternoon sessions):
Join Jen Line, Botanist of 15 years, to learn about the local plants, how they are adapted to living in the Yukon, their natural history and life cycles. You will have your eyes opened to the natural world in a whole new way!
Herbology Walk (Sunday half day – morning OR afternoon sessions):
